Step 1
Thin buttercream by adding two to four teaspoons of milk or water to a cup of buttercream. Separate into small bowls, each bowl for a different colour.
Add preferred colour, a little at a time and mix until you get a very light shade. The buttercream will be used as a base for the cupcakes.
Step 2
Cupcake preparation: To get a flat and smooth surface, level the cupcake by cutting it with a serrated knife.
Step 3
Ice the cupcake with buttercream by using a small spatula.
Step 4
Tint piping gel by adding a tiny amount of colour.
Step 5
Cut the pointed end of the piping bag and insert the tip. Fill the bag with not more than ? cup of buttercream. Set aside.
Step 6
Take the iced cupcake and using a toothpick, sketch a pattern that you want. If you make an error, just smoothen the icing and re-do. Skip this process if you are confident of piping the pattern directly onto the cupcakes.
Step 7
Follow the outline by piping with the buttercream. This will act as a dam to prevent the piping gel from seeping out.
Step 8
Fill the pattern with the tinted piping gel. You can use a piping bag or a small spoon. Smooth and fill the corners with a small brush.
