Cockles, Clams and Escargots at Jalan Bunga Raya, Malacca

I was at Malacca last week during the long Hari Raya and Merdeka Day break. Before heading to Malacca, as usual we did some research on some of the places that offers Malacca’s “must try” food. VK came across a roadside stall at Jalan Bunga Raya which is located in the middle of Malacca town which offers cockles, clams, escargots and dried squid. Hearing that I could be having a snack at the roadside beside a drain, I felt quite reluctant to try it at first.

I was quite surprised when I arrive at Jalan Bunga Raya. The place is filled with tourists and locals. Banners and posters of Ho Chiak and Axian (from Astro food channel) were hanging on both of the road stalls. This shouldn’t be too bad, I told myself.

Stall

There are two stalls which you could choose from. Both of them should offers the same thing. But we got information from a reliable source that this man prepares the sauces better. As the sauces plays a vital role here, we chose this stall instead of the other.

Stall2

As we arrived quite early, we waited for a while for the stall owner to prepare their ingredients. Each table is given a small bucket to collect those unwanted shells.

Stall1

We were also given our own sauces. It consists of chilli, crushed peanuts, lime juice and some sweet sauces (which I think could be plum sauce).

Sauces

The clams doesn’t really have much taste, but after dipping it with the sauce given, it tastes really good.

Clams

We also ordered their cockles. As this was our first time here, we didn’t know how to order it.

Cockles

Our cockles were quite bloody. We though that this was normal until the guy next to us emphasizes to the stall owner to make sure that it was fully cooked.

This is how it looks like after opening it up.

Wanting to try more, we ordered their escargots. This is the uncooked escargots.

Escargot

And this is how it looks like inside. Although it doesn’t look yummy, it doesn’t tastes as bad as it looks.

The cockles and clams stall along be backlane of Jalan Bunga Raya is not exactly the kind of place that you would bring your date to. But if you are interested in experiencing this eye-opening experience, come to the backlane of Jalan Bunga Raya. It is located at the back of Madam King’s departmental stall
